On September 30, 2026, the Smart Farm and Landscape Architecture Center at Walailak University held a consultation meeting with SCG and SCIeco Services Co., Ltd. (SCIeco) to discuss “integrated waste management.” The initiative aims to transform waste generated within the university and its surrounding communities into sustainable renewable energy.
According to 2025 data from the Pollution Control Department, Thailand generates 27.76 million tons of solid waste annually, with Nakhon Si Thammarat province alone producing approximately 1,000 tons per day. A major issue contributing to this problem is the contamination of organic waste, which renders the bulk of the waste unusable.
To address this challenge, SCG and SCIeco proposed a waste management model driven by the “4R” principles (Waste Management Hierarchy). This model involves processing sorted, combustible community waste into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) to replace coal in the production process at SCG’s Thung Song cement plant, thereby tangibly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution.
